Online music revenues increased by 40% in 2020. At the same time, royalties from live performances for music performance in public places, cafes, bars, and restaurants have been cut threefold. Such statistics, writes the newspaper “Vechernyaya Moskva”, were cited by the Chairman of the Board of the Russian Authors’ Society (RAO) Maxim Dmitriev.

“Online distribution has grown significantly in Russia compared to the global market,” – the expert said during the online discussion “Culture and Creative Industries in Russia” hosted by Confederation of Rightholders’ Societies of Europe and Asia (CRSEA) on the international communication platform Creative Global Talks. – This was due to the growth of live streams and the fact that people, being isolated, wanted to consume content – listen to music and watch videos. Therefore, the activity in this segment has grown. In figures, in 2020, the revenue of companies from the use of music online grew by an average of 40 percent.”

According to Maxim Dmitriev, authors turned out to be the most vulnerable part of the entertainment industry. Due to restrictive measures, the number of performances by artists in public places decreased last year.
