The musical instrument was presented to Igor Butman by Pete LaPlaca, the founder of LA Sax company at Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in 1995. The musician played this instrument from 1995 to 2002, the saxophone is also depicted on the back of the musician’s album “Nostalgie”.
The saxophone was passed down at the finale of the “JAZZ!100!RUSSIA!” festival. The musician handed the sax over to the museum General Director, Mikhail Bryzgalov. The instrument was immediately placed into a showcase for display.
“Today the Museum funds have been replenished by a unique instrument with rich history. The saxophone previously owned by Russian People’s Artist Igor Butman instantly earned its rightful place at the jazz exhibition,” commented Mikhail Bryzgalov, General Director, Museum of Music.
On February 13th, the Museum also held a special preview of “JAZZ 100” movie. The film is to be released in the near future. Additionally, the film viewers participated in a signature tour of the exhibition by its curator and the film scriptwriter, Kirill Moshkov, Editor of Jazz.Ru magazine. The event organizers are the Russian National Museum of Music and Igor Butman Foundation.
