In 2023, Russian media holdings and video services faced constant pressure from pirates. Thus, copyright holders managed to block 89 million links within the framework of the anti-piracy memorandum. This was reported by Kommersant with reference to market participants.
Gazprom-Media Holding initiated the blocking and deletion of over 8.5 million links last year, which is by 19.3 % more than in 2022. The number of blocked sites with content increased year-on-year by 8.5 %, to 16 thousand, the company said. In particular, 5.5 million links were removed from Yandex search results, 4.1 million – from Google search results. The holding initiated 923 court cases that year.
Start said that in 2023 it identified more than 700 000 pirated links on the network and over 130 000 links on social networks. Okko initiated blocking of 1.5 million links a year. Kion and National Media Group did not disclose the number of removed links, noting only the growth of the indicator.
Market participants note that the interest of pirates is fueled by “audience excitement before upcoming premieres”.
It was previously reported that over the past two years, the market of illegal audio, video and book services in Russia has increased by 71.4 %, up to 12 billion rubles. The pirates’ income has increased against the backdrop of Netflix and Hollywood leaving the Russian Federation.
